cmntx records: Emanuel Ayvas & Jackson Greenberg double album release celebration

cmntx records presents a double release show for Emanuel Ayvas ('AMMA') and Jackson Greenberg ('The Things We Pass On Through Our Genes'), with composer Fritz Myers and poet Jason Mitchell.

Ayas presents a set of narrative works that weave together his practices in poetry and music, performing alongside string quintet. Through the electronic manipulation of a live string quartet, Greenberg's "The Things We Pass On Through Our Genes" explores inherited trauma and how that carries from generation to generation. Myers' premieres a new arrangement of his song “Electric Souls” accompanied by string quartet, paired with his quartet "The Time Is Going to Pass Anyway".

InfraSound: Portals Between Worlds

InfraSound is excited to welcome you to our 2023-2024 season opener “Portals Between Worlds,” an immersive concert experience that explores how musical compositions can act as a “portal” between a composer’s internal environment and an audience. Works include Nico Muhly’s riveting and energetic doublespeak, the world premiere of a new piccolo trio by Paul Novak called Ornithology of Desire, Yaz Lancaster’s enigmatic yesterday, today, tomorrow, the next day, Rajna Swaminathan’s fleet / hold, Euna Joh’s captivating Kin Saranga, Mario Diaz de Leon’s transcendental Portals Before Dawn, and a new arrangement of Sinńead O’Connor’s sorrowful and powerful rock ballad Troy

Performed by the InfraSound Ensemble:

About the Album:

"The Organ That Breathes" is a homecoming for composer Alex Ring Gray, whose earliest days of writing music were for his own saxophone quartet in high school, as they could not afford to purchase sheet music. After a decade of expanding into other composing mediums, Gray returns to his primary instrument with densely layered improvisations, textures, and drones; morphing his saxophone into a living, breathing reed organ. Actual organs build the through-line, with several variants (electric, reed, pipe) blending and crossfading with Gray's saxophones.

The importance of breathing as a woodwind player led the album to largely become a meditation on the fragility of health. Several pieces were written as cathartic reactions to loved ones' health issues (diabetes, Fahr’s syndrome, cancers), or in remembrance of ones who had passed. Others are focused on the saxophonist's own breath, intertwining Gray’s own performance practice with meditation breathing exercises. re: meditations showcases his and his collaborators (Seth Fox, Blake Opper, Erin Rogers) pushing their lungs to the limit in an ode to experimental saxophone legends Jon Gibson, Terry Riley, Dickie Landry, and Pharoah Sanders.

"The Organ That Breathes" releases June 16.
